Evaluation Question 7

Evaluation Question 6

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?
My target audience spans from teenagers from the age of 16 up to people of the age of 24. With this in mind i have laid out and designed my magazine to suit the needs of this particular mainstream audience to ensure it becomes appealing to them and therefore would be successful in magazine industry. My target audience is of both genders but i have designed it maybe to be of a more male feel to it. I feel it may be primarily male due to the style and genre of the music. On the other hand though i feel i could attract females as i have a male on the front cover which may in turn mean that females like him and want to find out more about the male artist in the magazine, this would ensure they would buy it. In difference to this i feel that the male artist could act as an inspiration for men as they could aspire to look and be like him as he is seen to cool in this area of music. They may aspire to be like him as they are interested and take a liking to his clothing that he is wearing on the cover. I also believe that the colours of the magazine would attract makes to the buy it as they are quite manly colours such as black and white and i think they would be an aesthetically pleasing to a male as they co-ordinate well the photo and also make it look very stylish. On my front cover i made sure that i included both male and female artist that were featured in my magazine, again to ensure that i appealed to both genders. I have chosen a mixture of British artists but also a section of worldwide artists to use on my cover lines, i have done this in order to attract not only British people but to appeal to a wider audience. I also did this as a lot of the big superstars come from America etc. and those are the artists who appeal to my target audience. I also believe that my audience would prefer to see the American artists live and at a big venue than going to see a smaller British band. Throughout my magazine I made sure that i included festivals such as V and wireless. I chose these two festivals as i felt these were the most suited to my target audience. I feel if i had of put festivals such as Glastonbury and Leeds and reading i could have disengaged my audience as i don't think they would have been majorly interested in these types of festivals, this is why i decided to go down the V and Wireless route. I designed my contents page to suit the style of my audience as the content is brief in its description in what is available inside the magazine and so I did this as i believe that my audience would prefer this style other than a contents page with lots of information on it. I also think that the style of music I am aiming for is shown in the contents page. The language register i decided to use in my magazine was formal language as I wanted the magazine to look classy and more than anything sophisticated  this therefore meant no spelling mistakes were acceptable also i didn't want any incorrect grammar or an slang involved in my contents. I feel that the picture would be attractive to them as the artists are young and successful who they would aspire to be like. The fact that many of my features gives the reader an insight in to some of their favourite artists is a feature that I feel would attract my audience. An example of this is the interview with Justin Timberlake that is featured inside my magazine.

I feel that my double page spread would defiantly appeal to my target audience as the photo contains my male artist putting on a slightly cocky and fun upbeat pose which i feel sums the mainstream genre of music up perfectly. I also feel as if the way my artist is dressed shows that he is mainstream and would appeal to my audience. I think that the audience would be interested in what the artist has to say and so would want to read the interview. The interview is there to give the readership of my magazine a very close insight into the artist and to kind of make the audience and the artist more attached. I decided to use a question and answer format opposed to a article type text due to the fact that i felt this question and answer format was more fun and appealing than an article. Also i took into consideration the time it would take to read the article and i felt it would be quicker to read an interview. Overall i feel i have really considered my audience whilst constructing my magazine in every stage. I feel the overall product would be attractive to them and ensure the magazine would be successful due to this. I think my audience profile helped me a lot to be able to achieve this and I also focused a lot on how my artist would be represented to the audience and how that would fit in with my magazine.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?
After researching different types of audiences on UK tribes and other internet sources plus  using my own knowledge i have decided to try and ensure that my magazine appeals to both genders, although i could see the magazine edging towards a more Male bias due to the content i wish to include. The age group i plan to target is of 16-24, specifically with an interest in mainstream Hip Hop and Pop. Artists that my target audience will in my opinion like consist of the following Bruno Mars, Rihanna , Olly Murs, Flo Rida, Rita Ora, Drake, David Guetta and Calvin Harris etc. So what is Mainstream? The mainstream includes all popular culture and media culture, typically disseminated by mass media.

My mainstream audience are very much affected and persuaded by different types of Media sources such as Radio, TV, Newspapers and also Magazines. This is why i chose this particular audience above others such as Indie or Rock, as i felt the mainstream style would have more of an effect the audience. Also my audience are big users of social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Myspace etc. On sites like these they follow all there aspirational role modles and keep upto date with whats happening in TV, Muisc and the film Industry.

My target audience will oftenly enjoy regular trips to big shopping malls such as The Bull Ring in Birmingham and the Highcross in Leicester.During their trips to these malls, shops often visited are the mainsteam ones such as Topman, River Island, and Zara.Hobbies for my target audience consist of partying in big clubs in towns and cities, downloading big chart music from Itunes and eating out at places such as Nando's, Wagamamas etc. They may also enjoy regular trips to the cinema to see the latest blockbuster film and listening to radio stations such as Radio 1 or Capital FM. They may participate in sports such as Football or Basketball. Social Networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook will also be a big part of their social lifes as these are very popular and they can follow the artists that would appear in the magazine. The disposable income of my target audience should be fairly high as they are young and may still  be living at home therefore not having to pay any sort of rent, this will allow them to spend money on such things as Magazines, which is why I targeted them specifically.

My target audience will consist of people who follow the latest fashion and are always upto date when it comes to the showbiz gossip etc. My mainstream auidence will oftenly tune into tv shows such as 'The Only way is Essex' (Towie) as the majority of the audience aspire to be similar in their ways as people such as Joey Essex, Mark Wright etc. Plus the female section of my target audience will also look upto some of the stars of Towie such as Samantha fairs, Frankie Essex and also Cheryl Cole etc.

My audience will very oftenly be found at music festivals such as the V festival and Wireless, as the acts that generally perform there tend to be mainstream. For example Justin Timberlake is one of the headliners at Wireless this year and this is a typical/common choice of artist that these kind of festivals select to perform as they know this sort of artist appeals to the mainstream audience they are wanting to attract.

The price of Fresh Echo, is £4.00. I priced it at this particular price as I felt due to the fact that it is a monthly issue and I am aiming my magazine at the younger genration who don't want to paying a lot of money for an accesorie such as a magazine.

Font decision used

The font that I used throughout my magazine was very basic but sophisticated. I chose this font as I felt it would  appeal to the readership of my magazine 'Fresh Echo'.

Double page spread analysis

From the main image we can clearly tell that this magazine is focusing on the pop/chart music genre.
We can tell this as the pose Florence is pulling represents the cockiness and personality in the way
of what a pop artist would generally act like. Florence the artist is mainly positioned on the left hand side of the page with the text on the right. This follows the conventions of a normal music magazine.

Not in difference to most double page spreads the writing is separated from the main image. This is done to ensure that the image doesn't distract or interfere with the main article text that is the prominent focus on the double page spread.

Florence's hair is red. This may have been done to ensure that her hair is a complete contrast to the overly dull background of grey and white. Also it may have been done to ensure that she the artist stands out ans makes the whole double page spread in general look more appealing to the readership of the magazine. Her hair also matches with the american flag that she is sitting on. This has been specifically done to emphasize the point that she is heading in the direction of conquering America.

The little introduction before the main content of the article gives the audience a little bit of background and slightly irrelevant information about the Florence. This may have been done to close the gap between herself and the audience. Plus the intro tells us what the article will be about and contain. Also the artists name is in a completely different colour to everything else on the page so it stands out dramatically and lets the audience know who the article is about.

Spread over the double page are the words 'USA' and got the love, which is one of the titles of her songs. This is a play on words as it is stating the USA has got the love for her specifically.

Boxed 'F' Inspiration.

One major Influence in terms of the look of the title in my magazine 'Fresh Echo' was that of the 'F' at the start of Fresh was boxed similarly to that of the FADER style magazine title. Below is an example that i tried to base my title on in terms of this.

Evaluation Question 7

Personally i feel i have improved vast amounts from where i started from, during the process of production of my Preliminary task. During the preliminary task i didn't really have any sort of idea how to operate and use the photo shop software to create my Prelim Geek magazine. I was also very unaware of the general and common conventions of a good and clear music magazine. I was also unsure about the features that a successful magazine would boast and express throughout.  When i look back at my prelim task now after completing my final magazine I certainly feel that it looks very unprofessional and too some extent very fake and unfinished. Due to the fact there is no real colour scheme, combined with no real central theme at all included in the magazine. I also feel that the prelim mag looks tacky and cheap, this is the opposite of what i wanted my final piece to look like. Comparing the magazines i feel that my final mag 'Fresh Echo' very much is an improvement from my prelim task as you can feel there is a central theme that runs throughout adjacent too a colour scheme that also is continued throughout the entirety of the magazine. Another thing i have noticed about my prelim task is there was no real set layout that was set throughout the mag, instead it looked muddled and slightly complacent on my part. I really do feel this was due to the fact that i hadn't found my bearings on the photo shop software.

My Understanding and knowledge of magazines has drastically improved. My knowledge was mainly gained during the research and planning as it showed me how magazines appeal to different types of audience and the techniques and conventions they use. I really tried to let the real magazines inspire me as i regularly looked at exciting mags for ideas and conventions that they tended to use. The main magazines that inspired me were those of Vibe, GQ, Billboard  Fader etc. I think the reason i mainly chose these mags to inspire was due to the fact they appeal to a similar genre to whom i wanted my magazine to aspire to also. These selection of magazine gave me a clear understanding of what worked and more importantly what doesn't work at all.My photos are defiantly of a higher standard than on my prelim as they much more clearer and suit the style of the magazine a lot better. I think this is due to the fact that i put more thought into who was in the photo and also what sort of outfit they were wearing, where the photo was going to be taken and the poses the artist was performing.

Prelim Task- Geek magazine

This is my preliminary front cover. GEEK.
Below is my prelim contents page.

Changing to a more simplistic feel.

As i have been working on my magazine, i feel that i prefer covers with a minimilistic apprach, as in my opinion it looks sharp clear and simple, which could attract the audience that i want to target specifically.

Above is my cover for my magazine Fresh Echo. As you can see i have gone for a simple apparach to make the cover look sharp, clear and 'fresh'. I have drawn inspiration from the following;

These two magazine covers have both given me inspiration for my mgazine as they have a simplistic look to them and the main image on the front, is empowered totally and is the prominent focus of the cover.

Front cover photos.

I took these photos for my magzine front cover, but thten i changed my mind and decided this particular 'model' would be better suited to my contents page. Although this was unplanned, it worked out well as i had many photos too choose from for my contents picture.

Photoshoot for my contents page

These are some of the photos i took for my front cover of my magazine. I chose too take some photos on a white background and a brick background, as it gives a differed effect.

I am currently working on my contents page. As the teachers suggested the layout and design of the place needed to be improved.

Final drafts - FRESH Magazine

Language Register

The language register used by magazines all depends upon the genre of the magazine and the target audience so the content of the magazine appeals to them. Although there are some magazines that dont have a specific genre and vary there use of language with the type of music that is being used.

Different magazines use different registers to match their magazines genre. For example the music magazine NME which is a mainstream rock/pop mag uses informal slang lanuage when presenting it's articles in the mag. This may be due tot he fact that the audience will be morde in tune with this particualar language register. Which in turn will mean that the mag will appeal more to the readers, so this should ensure they will buy the mag more. On the covers of the NME mags there is often immature images placed on the cover which in genral have a theme of humour throughout, again this obviously appeals to the readership so they will enjoy reasing and looking at it as it provides a differnt form of entertainment. The images and terminolgy they use throughotu the magazine is attractive to the target audience as it complitments and matches the genre of the magazine really well.

On the other hand an example of a magazine that uses a formal language register is the music magazine Q. Which some may argue is a higher class of magazine which entices peoiple of a higher socail background, this may be the reason that the Q magazine uses a more formal language throughout the magazine. the terminoly which is used throughout is of a higher sophistiacation than NME this may inturn mean that the magazine is slightly excluding teneagers. This may not be a bad thing for the mag as they maybe specifically aiming it at higher class sliughtly older audience for example in there early 20's. The font of the Q magazine is also of a more formal nature, this staright away may disencourage teenagers as they may not like the look of it. also in terms of the layout of the magzine, Q uses a very simple layout with very minimal text which to me makes the magazine look of a higher class than most others including NME.

For my magazine FRESH i want the language register to be somewhere in between NME and Q magazine. This should ensure that my target audience can be larger so this will possibly bring in more sales. I do not want my magzine to be to formal as this could put off possible readers, but on the other hand i also do not want it to be too informal which could attract people who do  not particualrety belong to my target audience.

Inspiration For fresh

5

Billboard (US)

Flaunt (US)

GQ's Man of the Year 2011

I really like the layout of all of these magazine especially as they are very very simple with very little text on them at all. I feel that with there being as minimum text as possible it make the mags look crisper and sharper which is what i am for my magazine to look like. This is particularly why these magazines inspire me.

Mainstream Moodboard

This moodboard consist of mainstream artists of the music world who i have took inspiration from to create my magazine 'FRESH'

Artist profile: Michael Kiely

Artist Name- Michael Kiely
Artist Age- 23
Artist Genre- Mainstream Pop- This style consist of upbeat rythmic music which appeals to the large majority of the youngsters in the UK. George's style of music can be found on the Radio 1 chart and also on radio stations such as Capital Fm, and Radio 1.
Influences- Olly Murs, Tinie Tempah, Drake, Rihanna, Jason Mraz etc.

Front Cover: George my artist will be the main focus of my magazine front cover. His attire will consist smart wear such as a shirt, Blazer, and a tie to either combine with colours of the shirt and tie or contrasts with them completely to ensure that it stands out. I have particularly chosen George to wear this style of attire due to the fact i feel that it matches and compliments the genre of the magazine very well, also the title of the magazine is 'FRESH' which with George wearing smart wear also matches this idea. This should in turn mean that George is perceived to be extremely fresh and stylish. The shot on my magazine of George will be a mid shot which just focuses on his upper torso and his head.

Double page spread: My double page spread will be split into two half's with one large image of Michael Kiely my artist on the left side with text incorporated and emerged into it and on the other side this will be where my text consisting of my question and answers will be situated. Also i plan to have a small image of George inserted into the space around the text on the left side just to enhance the affects of the spread.

Analysis of Institution- Bauer Media Group

Bauer Media Group

Bauer Media Group is a multinational media company headquartered in Hamburg, Germany which operates in 15 countries worldwide. Since the company was founded in 1875, it has been privately owned and under management by the Bauer family.

Bauer Verlagsgruppe has been managed by four generations of the Bauer family. Originally a small printing house, The Bauer Publishing Group has grown into a worldwide publishing and media company. The Bauer Publishing Group comprises 282 magazines worldwide in 15 countries, as well as TV and radio stations. Bauer started in the UK with the launch of Bella magazine in 1987 and as H Bauer Publishing became Britain's third largest publisher. Bauer further expanded in the UK with the purchase of Emap Consumer Media and Emap Radio in 2008 to become the UK's biggest publishing group.

H Bauer brands include women's weekly and TV listings magazines; namely Bella, Take a Break, that's life! TV Choice and Total TVGuide as well as a number of puzzle magazines. Other Bauer brands consist of Q Magazine which started out as a music magazine published monthly in the UK. As the Q magazine started to increase in size and popularity Bauer Media took it over whilst the magazine was in the process of being displayed via different sources of media such as Q TV and Q Radio. Another large magazine that now belongs to the Bauer company is that of Kerrang, these two magazines are leaders in their genres, so this in turn means that Bauer continues to expand and still remain one of the largest publishers in the UK.

But why have i chosen Bauer specifically for my magazine?

As this particular institution is so well known and successful in what it does i felt as if my magazine 'Fresh' would have the best chance of being a successful magazine in the near future. Also another factor that has persuaded me to choose Bauer is the fact that i feel they will maximize the publicity of my magazine through all other forms of media as they can, this should then ensure that 'Fresh Echo' gains a large readership in the UK and maybe in the distant future across countries throughout Europe.

But why would they publish my magazine?

I plan for my magazine to be aimed at a wide target audience largely formed of mainstream music fans who are enthusiasts about the newest and biggest chart topping songs. The age range i aim to target is in the region of 16 to 26. I feel as this range is fairly large this will ensure that there is something for everyone in the mag so in turn this should maximize possible sales of the magazine, which Bauer will be really pleased about. I also feel there is a gap in the market at the current time due to the fact that my mag will be mainstream but with a slight variation of hip/hop Pop which at the moment there doesn't seem to be a magazine that offers this. Again this should encourage Bauer to publish my mag due to the fact there is not much competition in this area which in turn will mean the magazine is more likely to succeed due to the fact that readership will not be shared with competitors, for example like the Rock/Indie magazine market there is two main competitors in NME and Kerrang who are forced to share there readership with the other. Also with the genre Mainstream Pop/ Hip Hop it is a very well known genre so Bauer will not have to fear the risk of the genre not catching on.
Bauer Verlagsgruppe logo2.svg
I have now changed my magazine completely from the draft as i feel i want a more minimilistic cover with very little writing and more focus and emphasis on my main image of my front cover. Also i have changed the magazine title name to Fresh Echo, as opposed to just the Fresh i have done this due to the fact that i feel Fresh Echo sounds more sophisticated and may appeal to the my audience better. I have used the following magzines for my minimilistic affect as inspiration.

Colour Pallet- Fresh Echo

The Colour Pallet i plan to use in my magazine consists of Black, Red and White. I have chosen these colours as i feel they are sharp and simple, to create a very fresh look. Also the colour red contrasts very well with the black and white as the red is a lot brighter and will stand out significantly. I plan to have my important notices in red and the masthead and the rest of my mag in black and white, this i feel will again make what i want to stand out, stand out! The colour palette of is vital as it is what first attracts the target market to your magazine, so you want it to stand out. These 3 colours stand out and have been used on previous magazines that have been really succesful. Most magazines use a 3 colour palette as this makes it look professional and appealing to the audience. I have gone with the 3 colour pallet as i feel this is one of the main conventions of a music magazine and it needs to be abided by.
White is oftenly associated with light, goodness, innocence and purity. It is considered to be the color of perfection and clarity. Also White represents coolness and cleanliness and makes the other 2 colours stand out more on a white background. Black often stands for the dark side of life and also with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. It is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious colour. , this is why i feel these two colours compliment each other well due to the contrast of pragmatics of the colours.
My inspiration for this colour pallet came from the following:

Target audience for Fresh Echo

After researching different types of audiences on UK tribes and other internet sources plus  using my own knowledge i have decided to try and ensure that my magazine appeals to both genders, although i could see the magazine edging towards a more Male bias due to the content i wish to include. The age group i plan to target is of 16-24, specifically with an interest in mainstream Hip Hop and Pop. Artists that my target audience will in my opinion like consist of the following Bruno Mars, Rihanna , Olly Murs, Flo Rida, Rita Ora, Robbie Williams, David Guetta and Calvin Harris etc.
My target audience enjoys regular trips to big shopping malls such as The Bull Ring in Birmingham and the Highcross in Leicester.During their trips to these malls, shops often visited are the mainsteam ones such as Topman, River Island, and Zara.Hobbies for my target audience consist of clubbing in big clubs in towns and cities, downloading big chart music from I tunes and eating out at places such as Nando's etc.

Magazine Title

I have decided to call my magazine 'Fresh Echo'. I chose this name as i felt the word 'Fresh' described what i  aim for my magazine to convey through various ways such as the layout, design and the overall content of the magazine. Originally i was just going to use the word 'Fresh' as my magazine name but i felt the 'Echo' part of the name matched it well as the the phonetics of this word are great and the two word together combine to make a great flowing catchy name.

Inspiration for Fresh Echo

Top 10 Chart- Mainstream Music (Fresh Echo Genre)

Audience Profile-Mainstream Individual- Frank Smith {Fresh Echo target Audience]

Mainstream Individual- Frank Smith

Music

Frank Smith is one of those guys who thrives off the new chart music that is constantly being updated weekly. He downloads all of the latest big tunes from artists such as Bruno Mars, Rihanna , Olly Murs, Flo Rida, Rita Ora, Robbie Williams, David Guetta and Calvin Harris etc. Frank will generally not stray too far away from the chart as he likes the upbeat rhythm of the songs and looks up to the very big stars creating the music. Frank doesn't particularly care about the instruments used he is more bothered about what the final product is like. Frank will often tune into radio stations such as Radio 1 extra, Capital, as they offer the big top charting songs at the current time.

Fashion and Style

Frank's fashion sense and style very much mirrors his music taste as he often likes too look sharp as the big stars do, but he also likes to go down the opposite route of casual wear. Again reflecting the idea of everything and anything goes in terms of music taste and clothing also. Frank likes to keep his appearance  in tip top shape, to ensure this he often goes for a sunbed to keep his tan looking good and also he is regularly down the gym maintaining his good shaped body. This again may be a result of the chart topping stars participating in these kind of activities and Frank copying them in a way as he idolizes them and wants to be like them in every way possible.

 Possible Outfits worn by Frank:

Casual Wear- This is one of Frank's casual outfits, consisting generally of Denim Jeans, crew neck / V neck sweatshirts combined with some kind of trainers. Often Nike trainers.

Smart Wear- Frank often switches to this style when he is going to a social event at night, such as going out with his mates to one of the big clubs in the UK's largest cities. This outfit normally is made up of a Shirt and tie, Blazer of some sort and smart trousers, plus smart shoes to match.

Gym Wear- Frank often goes for the gym look when he is participating in sporting activities such as taking part in weightlifting sessions to make the appearance better.

Hobbies- Frank is a very enthusiastic guy who is up for anything that sounds fun and exciting. Frank loves his sport and plays football for his local team every week but at the weekend he loves to go clubbing with his friends in the centre of town/city. Him and his mates will most likely venture to the main well known clubs in the town where the music is loud and upbeat. Here Frank and his friends will enjoy there Friday/Saturday night drinking Cocktails at the bar and having a great time dancing on the dance floor, looking for girls to impress. When Frank is not out partying at the weekend he likes to shop in malls such as the Hghcross in Leicester where Topman, Zara, River Island and all the other large retailers can be found. This suites Frank perfectly as these are all seen to be 'Mainstream' shops where most people of this style shop. He will never venture to indie vintage shops that sell slightly different older clothes. Also Frank loves a weekly trip to Nando's and often Waga mamma's as well.

TV- Frank enjoys watching programmes that are broadcasted on the main Television channels such as BBC 1 BBC 2 ITV 1 etc. He enjoys shows such as Take me out, Big Brother, and The X factor. All these shows  tend to be shown at evening time. This is how Frank will often spend his weekend nights if he does not go out and party.
