Final drafts - FRESH Magazine

Language Register

The language register used by magazines all depends upon the genre of the magazine and the target audience so the content of the magazine appeals to them. Although there are some magazines that dont have a specific genre and vary there use of language with the type of music that is being used.

Different magazines use different registers to match their magazines genre. For example the music magazine NME which is a mainstream rock/pop mag uses informal slang lanuage when presenting it's articles in the mag. This may be due tot he fact that the audience will be morde in tune with this particualar language register. Which in turn will mean that the mag will appeal more to the readers, so this should ensure they will buy the mag more. On the covers of the NME mags there is often immature images placed on the cover which in genral have a theme of humour throughout, again this obviously appeals to the readership so they will enjoy reasing and looking at it as it provides a differnt form of entertainment. The images and terminolgy they use throughotu the magazine is attractive to the target audience as it complitments and matches the genre of the magazine really well.

On the other hand an example of a magazine that uses a formal language register is the music magazine Q. Which some may argue is a higher class of magazine which entices peoiple of a higher socail background, this may be the reason that the Q magazine uses a more formal language throughout the magazine. the terminoly which is used throughout is of a higher sophistiacation than NME this may inturn mean that the magazine is slightly excluding teneagers. This may not be a bad thing for the mag as they maybe specifically aiming it at higher class sliughtly older audience for example in there early 20's. The font of the Q magazine is also of a more formal nature, this staright away may disencourage teenagers as they may not like the look of it. also in terms of the layout of the magzine, Q uses a very simple layout with very minimal text which to me makes the magazine look of a higher class than most others including NME.

For my magazine FRESH i want the language register to be somewhere in between NME and Q magazine. This should ensure that my target audience can be larger so this will possibly bring in more sales. I do not want my magzine to be to formal as this could put off possible readers, but on the other hand i also do not want it to be too informal which could attract people who do  not particualrety belong to my target audience.

Inspiration For fresh

Billboard (US)

Flaunt (US)

GQ's Man of the Year 2011

I really like the layout of all of these magazine especially as they are very very simple with very little text on them at all. I feel that with there being as minimum text as possible it make the mags look crisper and sharper which is what i am for my magazine to look like. This is particularly why these magazines inspire me.

Mainstream Moodboard

This moodboard consist of mainstream artists of the music world who i have took inspiration from to create my magazine 'FRESH'

Artist profile: Michael Kiely

Artist Name- Michael Kiely
Artist Age- 23
Artist Genre- Mainstream Pop- This style consist of upbeat rythmic music which appeals to the large majority of the youngsters in the UK. George's style of music can be found on the Radio 1 chart and also on radio stations such as Capital Fm, and Radio 1.
Influences- Olly Murs, Tinie Tempah, Drake, Rihanna, Jason Mraz etc.

Front Cover: George my artist will be the main focus of my magazine front cover. His attire will consist smart wear such as a shirt, Blazer, and a tie to either combine with colours of the shirt and tie or contrasts with them completely to ensure that it stands out. I have particularly chosen George to wear this style of attire due to the fact i feel that it matches and compliments the genre of the magazine very well, also the title of the magazine is 'FRESH' which with George wearing smart wear also matches this idea. This should in turn mean that George is perceived to be extremely fresh and stylish. The shot on my magazine of George will be a mid shot which just focuses on his upper torso and his head.

Double page spread: My double page spread will be split into two half's with one large image of Michael Kiely my artist on the left side with text incorporated and emerged into it and on the other side this will be where my text consisting of my question and answers will be situated. Also i plan to have a small image of George inserted into the space around the text on the left side just to enhance the affects of the spread.

Analysis of Institution- Bauer Media Group

Bauer Media Group

Bauer Media Group is a multinational media company headquartered in Hamburg, Germany which operates in 15 countries worldwide. Since the company was founded in 1875, it has been privately owned and under management by the Bauer family.

Bauer Verlagsgruppe has been managed by four generations of the Bauer family. Originally a small printing house, The Bauer Publishing Group has grown into a worldwide publishing and media company. The Bauer Publishing Group comprises 282 magazines worldwide in 15 countries, as well as TV and radio stations. Bauer started in the UK with the launch of Bella magazine in 1987 and as H Bauer Publishing became Britain's third largest publisher. Bauer further expanded in the UK with the purchase of Emap Consumer Media and Emap Radio in 2008 to become the UK's biggest publishing group.

H Bauer brands include women's weekly and TV listings magazines; namely Bella, Take a Break, that's life! TV Choice and Total TVGuide as well as a number of puzzle magazines. Other Bauer brands consist of Q Magazine which started out as a music magazine published monthly in the UK. As the Q magazine started to increase in size and popularity Bauer Media took it over whilst the magazine was in the process of being displayed via different sources of media such as Q TV and Q Radio. Another large magazine that now belongs to the Bauer company is that of Kerrang, these two magazines are leaders in their genres, so this in turn means that Bauer continues to expand and still remain one of the largest publishers in the UK.

But why have i chosen Bauer specifically for my magazine?

As this particular institution is so well known and successful in what it does i felt as if my magazine 'Fresh' would have the best chance of being a successful magazine in the near future. Also another factor that has persuaded me to choose Bauer is the fact that i feel they will maximize the publicity of my magazine through all other forms of media as they can, this should then ensure that 'Fresh Echo' gains a large readership in the UK and maybe in the distant future across countries throughout Europe.

But why would they publish my magazine?

I plan for my magazine to be aimed at a wide target audience largely formed of mainstream music fans who are enthusiasts about the newest and biggest chart topping songs. The age range i aim to target is in the region of 16 to 26. I feel as this range is fairly large this will ensure that there is something for everyone in the mag so in turn this should maximize possible sales of the magazine, which Bauer will be really pleased about. I also feel there is a gap in the market at the current time due to the fact that my mag will be mainstream but with a slight variation of hip/hop Pop which at the moment there doesn't seem to be a magazine that offers this. Again this should encourage Bauer to publish my mag due to the fact there is not much competition in this area which in turn will mean the magazine is more likely to succeed due to the fact that readership will not be shared with competitors, for example like the Rock/Indie magazine market there is two main competitors in NME and Kerrang who are forced to share there readership with the other. Also with the genre Mainstream Pop/ Hip Hop it is a very well known genre so Bauer will not have to fear the risk of the genre not catching on.

I have now changed my magazine completely from the draft as i feel i want a more minimilistic cover with very little writing and more focus and emphasis on my main image of my front cover. Also i have changed the magazine title name to Fresh Echo, as opposed to just the Fresh i have done this due to the fact that i feel Fresh Echo sounds more sophisticated and may appeal to the my audience better. I have used the following magzines for my minimilistic affect as inspiration.
